Amazingly, after running himself into the Byrd record books, senior running back Jalin Thomas still had enough energy to dance a jig on the Lee Hedges sidelines Friday night with Byrd homecoming queen Jasmine Davis. The spoils of being a winner.

The senior speedster rushed for an astounding 342 yards, the third best total in the Jackets’ recorded history, and scored three times to lead his team to a key 49-34 District 1-5A victory against the Parkway Panthers (3-4, 2-2).

The effort attracted some good-natured ribbing from his teammates in the waning minutes of the game and drew praise from coach Mike Suggs, which comes about as often as the Red River Revel opens downtown. But Suggs’ accolade came with the usual cravat.

“It started up front with a great job by our offensive line,” Suggs said. “But Jalin had a great game. He has a lot of speed, strength and power.”

Thomas eclipsed Brandon Nightingale’s 323 yards against Evangel in 2000 for the No. 3 spot. The top two slots belong to Charles Ball for a 407-yard effort against Huntington in 1990 and Richard Gay for compiling 364 yards against Springhill in 1954.

“It was a very special night. We played hard and I couldn’t ask for anything better,” Thomas said. “My team executed, and my legs are killing me.”
