No. 7 St. Augustine 27, No. 10 C.E. Byrd 15

At Tad Gormley Stadium, Friday (Nov. 11), Division I 1st round playoff game

Records: St. Augustine 7-4, C.E. Byrd 4-7

Right off the bat, St. Augustine made an early statement following a 7-play 93-yard drive as Purple Knight quarterback Justice McCoy ran the ball in from 14 yards out. Following the PAT, the Purple Knights took a 7-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets answered with 14-play 70-yard drive that ended with a 27-yard field goal by Ben Smith. During that drive, Byrd took advantage of three encroachment penalties called against St. Augustine.

The Purple Knights looked to add to their lead and after a long drive, they faced a 4th and 2 deep in Yellow Jacket territory. The ball went to a defensive lineman who lined up in the backfield, but a fumble recovered by Byrd in the end zone resulted in a change in possession and a touchback.

Byrd orchestrated a long drive of its own, but like its opponent, faced a 4th down in the opposing team’s territory. The Yellow Jackets came up short on a run attempt and the ball went back to the Purple Knights.

McCoy rallied his troops and it resulted in more points as he completed all four of his passes on the drive including a 41-yard touchdown pass to Takulve Williams, who reached above his defender to make the catch despite being tightly covered. The PAT was no good, but St. Augustine took a 13-3 lead into the half.

Byrd put together a long drive that took up most of the third quarter but couldn’t put more points on the board as the Yellow Jackets turned the ball over on downs, deep in Purple Knight territory
