Long time Byrd girls’ basketball coach Toni Martinez has resigned from her position at the school.

Martinez, who will be the head coach in Saturday’s 2018 Louisiana High School Coaches Association East-West All-Star game at Bossier Parish Community College, said she will be an assistant coach for Lyndzee McConathy at Airline next fall.

She follows her husband Todd, the former Captain Shreve coach, who was recently named the head coach at Benton, to Bossier Parish.

“It was definitely a tough decision because Byrd has been a part of my life for so long,” Martinez said. “I’m thankful for all the people who’ve supported me there over the years.”

Byrd principal Jerry Badgley said the position has been posted on the LHSAA website.

A 1997 graduate of Byrd, Martinez landed her first teaching job there after college graduation. She played for Gay Nix, David Duhon and Ronnie Howell as a Lady Jacket then was an assistant coach for Patrick Oathout at Byrd. She also coached for five seasons at LSUS as Howell’s assistant.
