The Byrd basketball team entered Tuesday night’s road game with Calvary hoping to disrupt the Cavs’ school-record 5-game winning streak to open the season. They left with a milestone victory for their veteran coach.

It may be hard for many in the northwest Louisiana basketball family to believe but Byrd’s Rusty Johnson picked up his 800th career coaching victory when his club slipped past Calvary 53-50 in overtime. That’s right – the Jackets made their coach sweat it out. Byrd didn’t get its first lead in the game until the overtime period. But it never turned it loose once the Jackets had it in hand.

Following the final buzzer, the Jackets engulfed their coach and let out a loud cheer for Johnson, who began shedding a tear.

“I just wish my wife was here to share this with me,” Johnson said. “I wouldn’t even be coaching if she had not pushed me into it.”

Johnson’s wife, Carolyn, passed away a few months ago after battling cancer for quite some time.

Rusty Johnson was able to celebrate No. 800 with his two sons, Tyler and Todd.

It took him 28 years of coaching hundreds of young men to achieve the mark. He is in his seventh year at Byrd. It was Tyler he turned to in trying to remember details of No. 700.

“It was in his first year at Byrd and it was against Haughton in a district game,” Tyler said.
