Caddo Magnet’s Iza Zabaneh slides in for the ball in front of Byrd’s Angel Abrego Monday night.

It’s that time of year when high school soccer teams in Louisiana want to be in top form for their biggest matches.

Byrd (11-3-3, 6-0-0 District 1-I) appears to be hitting its stride at the right time, and it showed in their most important match of the season against Caddo Magnet (9-6-2, 4-1-1) Monday night. An early goal against the run of play by the visitors didn’t hold up as the Yellow Jackets earned a 3-1 win to capture the District 1-I title.

“It was a cup final this evening,” Byrd coach Gary McCormick said. “We took our chances. The keepers made some good saves.”

His first district title wasn’t the only thing on the line with Byrd ranked No. 6 in the latest power ratings, hoping to earn one of the top eight seeds and a first-round bye. Mustangs coach Nick Flowers said the Yellow Jackets also won the title of “top team in the city”, and even Division II No. 2 Captain Shreve would have a hard time disputing that, since Byrd beat the Gators 2-0 in the season opener.
