Baseball releases schedule
January 14, 2016, 3:50 am

Byrd baseball Coach Greg Williams has released the 2016 varsity, junior varsity and freshmen schedules. They schedules can be found under the baseball tab and schedules. For a printable version look under baseball and forms.

The Jackets will take the field for the first time on Sat., Jan. 30 at noon in a "umpires" scrimmage against the Minden Crimson Tide at The Hive. Byrd's preseason slate continues on Feb. 13 with a scrimmage at West Monroe. The 2016 Jamboree will be played on Feb. 20 at North DeSoto.

The 2016 schedule is a daunting one for the Yellow Jackets. Byrd will play 18 regular season games and participate in four tournaments. The slate reads like a "who's who" of elite baseball programs in the state of Louisiana. Over the course of the season Byrd will meet the back-to-back Class 5A state champions Barbe Buccaneers, the defending Class 4A state champs St. Thomas More Cougars of Lafayette as well as perennial powerhouses like the Jesuit Blue Jays, the Zachary Broncos, the Lafayette Lions and the West Monroe Rebels. The season opener is set for Feb. 22 against the Neville Tigers on the newly installed turf playing surface at Louisiana Tech's J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.

As if District 1-5A weren't tough enough, now add the Evangel Eagles to the mix and it becomes arguably one of the best 5A districts in the state. With the addition of Evangel, which has won six state championships in its hitory, the teams will transition from a three-game series to now playing two games on home-and-home basis.

Prior to the start of the regular season, the Jackets will participate in two scrimmages - versus Minden at 1 p.m. on Jan. 30, and at West Monroe on Feb. 13 at 11 a.m.  The Jamboree will be held Feb. 20 at North DeSoto and is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
