April 23, 2017, 4:20 pm

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association sent out a memo to all member school head coaches last week explaining the playoff formats in all classes and divisions. Byrd is classified a "select" school thereby the Yellow Jackets baseball team will participate in the Division I playoffs.

Division I consists of 13 teams - 10 private schools, mostly Catholic schools, and three public schools, including Byrd. The Division I playoffs begin with a 32-team bracket format. Technically, all teams have a bye in the first round or bi-district as it's called by the LHSAA. The second round or regional round is where the first actual games are played on the field. In the regionals, which will take place Fri. and Sat., April 28-29, the top three seeds have a bye to the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals will be held Fri. and Sat., May 5-6. Both the regionals and quarterfinals are best 2-of-3 series. The quarterfinal winners advance to the LHSAA State Tournament at McMurry Park in Sulphur, which will be held May 10-13. The semifinals and finals are single game elimination rounds.

The Byrd Yellow Jackets are the No. 8 seed and play host to the No. 9 seed Evangel Eagles. The first game is set for 6 p.m., Friday, Apr. 28 at The Hive. Game two is scheduled for noon on Saturday, Apr. 29. If necessary, game three will follow.

The first 200 Byrd students at Friday's playoff game will receive a free corn dog with their valid student ID.
