Byrd catcher Trent Touchet and Evangel pitcher/shortstop Emily Deramus were District 1-5A’s only representatives on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 5A first team released Thursday.

Undefeated Barbe pitcher Tyler Booth (8-0) was named the outstanding baseball player while Acadiana’s Matt McCullough was chosen the LSWA Coach of the Year. Top softball honors went to Alexandria pitcher Carrie Boswell (18-2) and her coach, Erica Harwell, is the 5A Coach of the year.

Touchet, a Times All-City first teamer and a Best of Preps honoree, was the guiding force behind the plate for the Yellow Jackets, who advanced to the state title game and finished 25-12 overall. Touchet caught 35 games for coach Greg Williams.

“That’s remarkable when you think about how many games we played,” Williams said. “Trent was very good behind the plate and his offensive numbers were also solid.”

Touchet hit .349 on the season and remains undecided on a college choice, according to Williams. The recent Byrd graduate is currently playing in Atlanta with Team Louisiana.

“Trent ended up batting leadoff for us in the end and was able to protect some hitters behind him,” Williams said. “The success we had this season was due to the leadership we had from seniors like him.”
