Head Coach Rusty Johnson enters his 7th year with the Byrd Yellow Jackets.

Johnson began his head coaching career at Albany High School for the 1990-1991 season, where he won the first district championship in the school’s history and was named the Livingston Parish Coach of the Year.

Johnson then moved to Zwolle High School in Sabine Parish, where his teams set records for scoring and won three state championships in 1992, 1993, and 1994, thus continuing a streak of seven state championships at Zwolle. Johnson became one of the only coaches in Louisiana history to win state championships in multiple classes (Class B in 1992 and 1993 and Class 2A in 1994).

After his very successful run at Zwolle, Johnson went to Haughton High School and stayed for eight seasons. During his time at Haughton, Johnson won four district championships, four bi-district championships, and had one state quarterfinal appearance.

In 2002, Johnson went back to Sabine Parish and began his tenure at Pleasant Hill High School. At Pleasant Hill,  his teams won five district championships and had six playoff appearances. He also had one state Semi-Final appearance in 2008, three Quarterfinal appearances in 2005, 2007, and 2008, and five Bi-District Championships. In 2008, Johnson was also selected to coach the West team in the LHSBCA Boys Basketball All-Star game.

In 2008, Johnson moved to Doyline High School. Johnson won a district championship in 2009 and two Bi-District championships in 2009 and 2010.

Johnson came to Byrd High School in 2011 and began a rebuilding process to bring the team back to its former glory. After a rocky start, the season ended on a high note with the Jackets winning five of their last six games and winning the first playoff game for Byrd High School in 15 years.

In the 2012 - 2013 season Johnson then led the Jackets to a 24-8 record in his second season at Byrd. They advanced to the regional round of the playoffs after hosting and winning the school's first home playoff game in 15 years.

For the 2013-14 season, Coach Johnson led the Yellow Jackets to a 27-6 record and a number 3 seed in the class 5A state playoffs. The Jackets also won the District 1-5A Championship, which was the first district title since 1998.

Johnson's 2014 - 2015 team captured the 1-5A District Championship again. The Yellow Jackets season ended with a trip to the Louisiana State Top 28 where the Jackets lost a overtime heartbreaker in the semi-finals to the the eventual state champion, Scotlandville. The Jackets finished the season 26-6. With the trip to the semi- finals  Johnson became first coach to take teams in four different classes to the Top 28.

Coach Johnson also led the Yellow Jackets to a 15-12 record in the 2015-2016 season and to an 18-10 record and playoff berth in the 2016-2017 season.

Coach Johnson is looking forward to  the 2017- 2018 being another successful season with the C.E. Byrd Yellow Jackets.
